Sheathing braces the frame, forms the air barrier and acts as the drainage plane. Taped and insulated panel systems collapse those layers into fewer steps — and fewer places for the assembly to fail.

A standing seam metal roof outlives two or three asphalt replacements and is fully recyclable at the end. Reflective coatings and synthetic underlayment add cooling savings and durability.

Fiber cement, thermally modified wood and composite cladding hold paint far longer than standard siding — fewer repaints, less solvent, less landfill. Rainscreen detailing buys even more service life.

Adhesives and caulks are the smallest line item on a job and often the largest source of indoor VOCs, because they cure inside a closed-up house. Look for GREENGUARD Gold or SCAQMD-compliant labeling.

Finger-jointed, reclaimed and formaldehyde-free profiles
Finger-jointed profiles use offcuts that would otherwise be waste and stay straighter than clear stock. On any composite profile the binder matters more than the wood — look for no added urea formaldehyde.
WOOD FINISHES, STAINS & SEALERS
Hardwax oils and plant-based stains over solvent poly
Hardwax oils penetrate the wood instead of forming a film, so they spot-repair rather than needing a full sand and recoat. That repairability is the sustainability argument — and the VOCs stay indoors.

Flooring covers more square footage than any other finish, making it the largest materials decision most remodels make. Choose by the room: the greenest floor is the one that isn't replaced in eight years.

Composite decking from recycled wood flour and reclaimed polyethylene never needs staining or sealing — over twenty-five years that saves more than the material comparison alone suggests.

Cork is stripped from the bark of living oak trees on a nine-year cycle, and it's warm and quiet underfoot. Worth knowing: most listings sold as 'cork tile' are bulletin board, not flooring.

Engineered hardwood puts a genuine wood wear layer over a stable core, using a fraction of the slow-growing species per square foot. Reclaimed goes further, returning century-old timber to service.

Waterproof, recyclable and hard to wear out
Rigid-core planks are waterproof, hard to wear out and increasingly made with recycled content. Look for FloorScore or GREENGUARD Gold certification on anything going into a bedroom.
NATURAL FIBER CARPET & RUGS
The alternative to wall-to-wall synthetic
Wool, sisal, jute and seagrass rugs bring softness underfoot without the synthetic backing and adhesives of wall-to-wall carpet. They also come up easily for cleaning, which extends their life.
LOW-VOC PAINT
Color without the fumes
Zero- and low-VOC interior paints now match conventional coverage and washability. The paint outgasses into the house for weeks after it dries, which makes this an easy place to spend a little more.
COUNTERTOPS & SURFACES
Counters, backsplashes and accents with a second life
Butcher block, paper composite, recycled glass and recycled-content quartz put real recycled material into the most visible surface in the house. The sealer matters as much as the slab.
NATIVE PLANT-LIFE
Landscape that stops asking for water
Plants native to a region evolved with its rainfall and winters, so an established planting needs little irrigation and no fertilizer. Match the regional mix to the site rather than buying a generic blend.
Paperless and fiberglass-faced gypsum removes the paper that mold feeds on, and most board already carries substantial recycled content. It ships through building supply, so we specify it locally.
