Do You Really Need a Panel Upgrade for Your EV Charger? Maybe Not.
If you've priced out adding a Level 2 EV charger to your home, you've probably run into the same unwelcome surprise a lot of our clients do: your electrical panel or service can't handle it, and now you're staring down thousands of dollars in upgrades before you've even plugged in a car.
A new product from Schneider Electric is worth knowing about if you're weighing that decision — and it points to a bigger shift in how smart, sustainable remodeling is starting to work.
The problem: EV charging outgrows old electrical systems
Homes built even 15–20 years ago were rarely wired with EV charging in mind, let alone charging stacked on top of modern loads like induction ranges, heat pumps, and electric dryers. As Electrek reports, panel and service upgrades to accommodate a new charger can run anywhere from about $2,000 to $6,500 or more, depending on the house and the scope of work. That's often the single biggest line item in an "EV-ready home" project — bigger than the charger itself.
A software-based workaround
Schneider's new charger, called Schneider Charge, takes a different approach. Instead of assuming a home needs more electrical capacity, it actively manages the capacity that's already there. The unit uses current transformers installed around a home's wiring to monitor real-time electricity use, and its SmartAmp system automatically throttles or ramps up the EV's charging rate depending on what else is running in the house at that moment. If the dryer or oven kicks on, charging output can dip temporarily; when demand elsewhere drops, it speeds back up. Notably, this load-balancing keeps working even if the home's Wi-Fi goes down, and it doesn't require a separate gateway device.
The charger delivers up to 11.5 kW at 48 amps (actual speed still depends on the vehicle's onboard charger), and it's part of a UL 3141-certified power-control system — a standard specifically meant to prevent overloading a home's electrical system. According to UL Solutions, systems like this can be a lower-cost alternative to a full panel or utility-service upgrade.
That said, this isn't a universal fix. Whether a managed-load setup can actually replace a panel upgrade depends on the specific house and whether the local authority having jurisdiction accepts that installation method. An electrician still needs to evaluate the home's wiring, panel, service capacity, and local code before anyone can promise a shortcut.
