The idea builds on a simple insight: the average person doesn't care exactly when their water gets heated, they care that it's hot when they step in the shower. By shifting that heating load to cheaper, often cleaner off-peak hours, a network of smart water heaters can act like a distributed thermal battery for the grid, absorbing excess renewable generation during the day and reducing the need for polluting "peaker" plants at times of high demand.
It's a good reminder for anyone planning a remodel or new build: sustainable construction isn't only about big-ticket items like solar arrays or envelope upgrades. Mechanical systems that most homeowners never think twice about, like water heaters, are increasingly where efficiency, cost savings, and grid resilience intersect.
